    Customizing a Template

The layout you choose when you start your blog might be the best you've ever seen, but after awhile it may no longer suit your needs.  Traffic, new features, reader requests - all these things can change how you want your blog to look and act.  Sometimes, you start a personal site, and you want to make it look more professional.

There are three ways to customize the design of a blogger blog, you can accomplish all three by heading over to the Dashboard and clicking the layout link.

Instead of 'Layout', you may see the words 'Template'.  This is because Blogger has since added the Layout feature, but older blogs started before the change may not have the new feature.  If this is the case, you need to upgrade your blog.  Read our article on "Upgrading Your Template" for more information on how to do this.  To make matters more confusing, Dashboard may refer to 'Layout' but the tab will say 'Template'

In Blogger, the layout and design of your blog are controlled by a single template - a document of code that controls everything from the size and font of text to the color of the background.  Changing the template changes the code, thereby changing the color or text.  Previously, changing this template required you to know HTML code pretty extensively, but recent changes by Blogger have put more control in the hands of first time bloggers.
