    Hosted Vs NonHosted Blogs

The first thing you need to know about blogging platforms is that they aren't all created equal.  Different software packages, managed by you or by a well-paid web-hosting tech, all tend to share the same, or at least similar, functionality for basic blogging.  Each. however, was built with a very different goal in mind.

Unlike a piece of software that you install on a computer, blogging software requires a server to work.  That can be a big challenge for a non-technical blogger who wants to start writing.  How can they make a good decision about web servers?

There are two kinds of Blogging platforms available:

    Hosted Blogs

Hosted blog services provide a solution where you don't need to think about the technology side of blogging at all.  You can worry about your next blog post, rather than how to configure a web server.  To use Hosted Blogging Software, you just log in, write a post click publish and leave.

There is no need here to think about how the software works, as long as it works when you need it to.  Many bloggers consider this setup the best way to go, especially for those that are non-technical or just starting out.  There are loads of examples, with any of your favourite Blogger blogs being a good example of running on Hosted Blogging Software.

    NonHosted Blogs

A few bloggers may want to run their own blogging system right from the get-go.  This setup is known as nonhosted.  When you install this software on your own web server, you take on a lot of responsibility related to keeping the blog and it's data running, private and up to date.  From a technical point of view, this kind of setup can be on the difficult side and can cause more issues to fix - especially, again, for the non-technical or those who are figuring out things as they go.  The trade of is way more flexibility to do whatever you want.  Most large news or blog sites (think TechCrunch or Fast Company are powered by NonHosted software solutions, such as WordPress or Movable Type.

Okay.  The above was a bit of a white lie.

Hosting your own blog is A LOT more difficult compared to the drag and drop solutions offered by Hosted Software services, such as Blogger.  However, if you like a challenge and want all the freedom, flexibility and bling that can come with your own site, NonHosted is the best choice.

This brings us back to how to make the choice in the first place.

If you want to get up and running as soon as possible, check out CMS Matrix.  It's a website designed to help people compare different software packages.  Just select the software that interests you and then compare the features side by side.

As important as the technical nuances are, you shouldn't really base your choice of software on the type of Web Server, The difference in functionality or even how much they cost.  Instead, you should consider what you want to accomplish with you blog.  To really make the decision we need to discuss the fundamental elements of the long-term goals you have in order to make the best choice.

I know, I know, (digital) infrastructure isn't sexy.

But they are the root and foundations of your construction.  A bit of patience will go along way to payoff later when you blog and software can grow with you.
