Establishing a Profile on Facebook
When you sign up on Facebook, one of the first things you have to do is set up a Profile. A Facebook profile is like a resume of personal and social activity - a resume about you and things you like, and one that can keep you up to date with the most recent happenings in your life.

Facebook kind of gets that if you were handing out a real resume, you'd give different people different versions. You social resume, your Facebook Profile could have your phone number, pictures from a crazy night in Vegas and an embarrassing quote or two. You resume to an employer would look very different - no Vegas pictures and a bigger focus on education and employment. If you're family were to get a copy, it might have an address as well as vacation photos or life news.
You show different facets of your life to different people. A Facebook profile is sort of the same, and lets you do just that. Your Profile has all kinds of privacy settings to specify who can see what.
Many people have a great time adding anything and everything to their profile. Others are more cautious. The safest rule of thumb is to only share information with someone you'd share in person. That is, don't share information on your profile you wouldn't want to share with someone in real life. We'll talk a lot about dealing with privacy in a later post, but for now, think of your Profile like a personal web site, and privacy controls for each specific part of your page. This helps you give the right personal resume to the right person.

A profile helps people who know you in the real world find and connect with you on Facebook. Everyone on Facebook is trying to keep track of people they know. If you have a common name, like Steve Smith or John Brown, it might be hard for people to find which person is you. Additional information, like which city you live in, where you went to school, maybe some photos will help people find the right Steven Smith.
The better reason for having a profile, and more importantly an accurate one, is letting you keep up with other people and vice-versa. Having an up to date, detailed profile means your friends and family always have the latest information about whats going on with your life, where you've moved to, and what's new. You don't have to give out your phone number anymore, just tell them to find you on Facebook. If a cousin overseas wants to send you a Christmas present, they don't have to ask for your address, they just look up your Profile. Instead of asking 'How are you', an up-to-date Profile lets you ask "I saw some of your pictures from Mexico. How was the snorkelling?"
