    What is HTML?

HTML files are really nothing more than text files in another language, designed to be understood and used by an Internet Browser.  HTML tells your browser everything it needs to know: for example, it will have instructions for every kind of browser about where to find images that need to be displayed on the page, how any text on the page should look, and what the text will link to in a hyperlink.

HTML also gives your browser instructions on how to display and play audio and video.

Using HTML is easy, once you get the hang of it.  Every piece of code - also called a 'tag' - has opening and closing tags to surround the piece of code your want to enact - although there are a few exceptions to this rule.

A few tags are standalone pieces of code, that can be inserted in one and only one spot.  The idea behind HTML is to 'mark up' text, photos and other elements with the code.

Hence the name: Hyper Text Markup Language
